Abstract

This contribution examines the canonical position of Christian faithful connected with the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X (FSSPX) after the episcopal ordinaitions of 1 July 2026. After situating these events within the longer history of tensions between FSSPX, it analyses the distinction between sacramental validity and liceity, the requirements of full ecclesial communion, and the canonical meaning of formal adhesion to schism. The study then assesses the legal consequences for the bishops involved, other clerics of the Fraternity, and lay faithful affliliated with it. Finally, it considers the new procedures for reconciliation and regularisation, showing how canonical penalties remain ordered toward the restoration of justice, conversion, removal of scandal, and full ecclesial communion.
