Abstract

The Swiss Federal Supreme Court ruling (17.01.2025) marks the end of the publicly funded catholic girls' secondary school St. Katharina in Wil (SG). The court ruled that public schools must remain confessionally neutral (Art. 15 BV) and that single-sex schools for girls discriminate boys (Art. 8 Para. 3 BV). Despite political initiatives in the Cantonal Council to preserve gender-segregated school models, the school is now restructuring its profile: starting in 2026, it will expand to include Realschule (basic level) classes, with a phased opening for boys beginning in 2029.
